Lost my volume control windows vista

A new window opens that says "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" at the top. It should have several tabs. One of these says "Notification Area"-click on it. About halfway down the screen of this tab there are a series of checkboxes.

Above this it says "Select which system icons to always show". Just check the box next to "Volume", click Apply and voila-your friendly little volume control slider returns! Problem solved, thanks for the help. As Seen On. Welcome to Tech Support Guy!

You may sometimes notice that they are not selected. The network, volume, and power features function correctly even though their associated icons do not appear in the notification area.

Are you wondering why does this happen? When you first start a computer new computer , the operating system typically runs start up service initializations that may take from one to six hours to finish, depending on which applications are preloaded on the computer.

The above issue usually occurs if the PC is shut down or restarted before windows 7 or vista has finished initializing all the background services, before it is restarted. If you gave your computer, running windows 7 or vista, enough time to finish the start up service initializations before you restarted it, and one or more of the system icons like volume control icon etc. Though the wizard is in English, the fix works for windows in other languages too.

If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix, from the above link, to a flash drive or to a CD, and then you can run it on the computer that has the problem.

If you prefer to edit the registry manually, then follow the steps mentioned below. But you must back up the registry before you do the edits as you may need it to restore the registry if a problem occurs due to incorrect editing. If you are running windows 7, then carry out the following steps after making the registry fix detailed above.

That is all! Now you will have the volume control icon in the most convenient location of windows, to adjust sound volume. In XP home my volume icon keeps disappearing. I have to do this every time!! There must be a better solution. If you use the classic start menu, right click on start, select properties, click taskbar, select customize and check the setting for the icon.

I have the same problem as Laura and the icon has disappeared after updates one for the modem and at a a different time an update for W-Defender and as with Laura I am unable to check or uncheck the show volume icon as it is greyed out as well as well as the network and power boxes.

A system restore is the only way to get the icon back. Strange eh? I prefer to have the 3 icons for clock, power, network, and volume always on display in my system tray, and my settings are permanently set for this. Hide Inactive Icons is unchecked. However, on my Vista Home Premium based laptop, I have noticed that whenever I do anything that requires me to reboot, the network and volume icons always disappear.

Retrieving them is impossible as the settings then show the checkboxes greyed out even though the options are both still checked. The only way to get the icons back is to shut down the machine completely, then power it up again. Even then, this does not always get both of the icons back every time. Very annoying. The same thing happened to my Volume Icon in the Task bar.

Volume Control has not been installed. I understand that the SndVol My volume icon has also disappeared from task-bar…tried everything here. Cant customize, cant check greyed- out volume box. Have Vista. Steve — I hate to say it but did you try a system restore since that is the only thing that would work for me? I have this same problem. Scroll to the Notification area section and click Turn system icons on or off. If Volume is enabled but the icon is still nowhere to be found on the taskbar, turn it off and back on.

That could help restore the missing volume icon in Windows. Otherwise, proceed to the next step. Return to the Taskbar settings page and click Select which icons appear on the taskbar. A faster alternative is manually unhiding the volume icon. Tap the arrow-up icon on the taskbar and drag the volume icon to the notification area. If the volume icon is missing, restarting Windows Explorer might help. Locate Windows Explorer or explorer. Finally, tap the Restart button at the bottom-left corner of the Task Manager window.

That would refresh both the taskbar and notification center and hopefully restore the missing sound icon. Your desktop and taskbar icon will reappear on the screen.
