Because the camera employs a slower shutter speed in both Twilight modes, a tripod is highly recommended to prevent blurring from camera movement.
Candle mode is just for candlelit scenes, great for birthdays or services. A tripod is once again recommended. Landscape mode sets the focus at infinity and uses a smaller lens aperture to capture sharp details both near and far away.
Beach mode optimizes the camera for bright situations and prevents color loss from overexposure. Soft snap mode enhances skin colors while keeping a soft focus for a pleasing glow.
Manual Mode : This mode provides total control over the exposure, as you're able to select both aperture and shutter speed independently of each other. Although aperture control is confined to only two available apertures of 2. Program Mode : This mode is marked on the Mode dial with a black camera icon and a "P. Automatic Mode : Indicated on the Mode dial with a green camera icon, this mode puts the camera in control over the exposure and everything except Macro, Image Size and Quality, Zoom, Flash, and the Self-Timer.
Playback Mode : Playback mode is noted on the Mode dial with the traditional Playback symbol a triangle enclosed within a black rectangle outline. In this mode, you can scroll through captured images, delete them, write-protect them, and set them up for printing on PictBridge-compatible printers.
You can also copy, resize, and rotate images. Movie Mode : A filmstrip icon marks this mode on the Mode dial. In Movie mode, you can record moving images and sound, for as long as the Memory Stick has space. The P93 also offers a Multi Burst mode separate from the movie mode and selected in the menu in Auto, Program, Manual, and Scene modes, which captures an extremely rapid frame burst of images, at a selectable rate of 7.
This would be a fun way to catch someone crossing a finish line during a race, or to analyze golf and tennis swings. Record Menu : Available in all three Record modes by pressing the Menu button, the Record menu offers the following options some options are not available in all modes :.
Recommended Software: Rescue your images! Just as important as an extra memory card is a tool to rescue your images when one of your cards fails at some point in the future. I get a lot of email from readers who've lost photos due to a corrupted memory card. Memory card corruption can happen with any card type and any camera manufacturer, nobody's immune.
A surprising number of "lost" images can be recovered with an inexpensive, easy to use piece of software though. Given the amount of email I've gotten on the topic, I now include this paragraph in all my digicam reviews. Read our review of it if you'd like, but download the program now , so you'll have it. While you're at it, download the PDF manual and quickstart guide as well. Stash the file in a safe place and it'll be there when you need it. Trust me, needing this is not a matter of if, but when PhotoRescue is about the best and easiest tool for recovering digital photos I've seen.
Disclosure: IR gets a small commission from sales of the product, but I'd highly recommend the program even if we didn't. OK, now back to our regularly scheduled review Despite their being packed in the box with many cameras, they simply don't have the juice to handle typical digicam demands. The few dollars up front will save you literally hundreds of dollars in the long run, not to mention the hassle of wimpy batteries running out in the middle of the action.
Buy two sets of batteries too, so one can always be in the charger, ready to go, and so have two sets available for longer excursions. Check out my Battery Shootout page for the latest in actual, measured performance of various AA batteries. Although you really don't need another charger, the one that ships with the P93 is adequate. See my test images and detailed analysis here.
The thumbnails below show a subset of my test images. Click on a thumbnail to see the full-size photo. For those readers interested in a set of less "standardized" photos from the P93, we've assembled a " gallery " of more pictorial images shot with the P Following are my usual condensed notes about the P93's performance: See the P93's sample pictures page for a full analysis.
As with all Imaging Resource product tests, I encourage you to let your own eyes be the judge of how well the camera performed. Explore the images on the pictures page , to see how P93's images compare to other cameras you may be considering. NOTE: For readers who've already read my review of the DSC-P73, you'll find the remarks here very similar to those for that model, as the two cameras are virtually identical, apart from the sensor.
The primary differences between the two are that the P93's lens seems to be of slightly higher quality than that of the P73, the P93 has slightly higher image noise, but it tends to look slightly better to the eye, and the P93's images tend to have a slight reddish cast that led me to prefer the P73's color a bit more.
Note the emphasis on the word "slight" in all the above, though: The two cameras really did perform very similarly on the various tests. Not sure which camera to buy? Let your eyes be the ultimate judge!

Check out our free Photo School area! Image Noise: Better than average noise levels, but somewhat heavy-handed noise-suppression. Like most of the current crop of 4-and 5-megapixel consumer-level cameras, the DSC-P93 shows some image noise even at its minimum ISO of As the ISO is increased though, the noise doesn't seem to increase as rapidly as in some competing models.
That said, the cost of this is somewhat heavy-handed noise-suppression processing, which tends to flatten-out detail in areas of subtle contrast. So, good marks to the P93 for low image noise, but some points deducted for the subject detail lost in the process. Interestingly, while numerical measurements show the P93's image noise to be higher than that of its lower-resolution sibling the P73, the P93's noise seems less obtrusive, apparently due in part to its finer "grain structure.
The position of the flash results in uneven lighting. The DSC-P93 turned in about an average performance in the macro category, capturing a minimum area of 3. Resolution was very high, with strong detail in the dollar bill, coins, and brooch. Details were sharp in the center of the frame, though all four corners of the frame were fairly soft.
A common failing in digicams' macro shooting. The DSC-P93's flash is too far to the side of the camera to provide even coverage for the closest macro shots. Night Shots : Surprisingly good low-light performance, with good color and fairly low image noise. Very good low-light focusing as well. At ISO , the shot at the lowest light level is slightly dim, but the image was still usable.
Color looks about right, though takes on a reddish cast at the lower light levels. The contrast between the P93 and the P73's image noise levels was most apparent to me when comparing the low-light test shots. Nice, too, is that the P93 can focus in complete darkness on nearby subjects, at least , thanks to its autofocus illuminator.
The DSC-P93's optical viewfinder is pretty tight, showing only about 82 percent frame accuracy at both wide angle and telephoto zoom settings. The LCD monitor fared much better. It was actually very slightly loose, as the measurement lines wound up outside the final frame. Its optical viewfinder could use a little help though Optical Distortion : High barrel distortion at wide angle, and a moderate amount at telephoto.
Low to moderate chromatic aberration. Digital zoom can be selected from smart zoom or precision digital zoom. The enlargement method and the zoom scale differ according to the image size and the zoom type, so select the zoom to match the shooting purpose. When you press the zoom button, the zoom scaling indicator appears on the LCD screen as follows.
The W side of this line is optical zoom area, and the T side is digital zoom area. Optical zoom: Smart zoom:. Precision digital zoom:. The or indicator flashes, and AF operates with priority. The default setting of the image size is [4M]. However, this has no effect on the recorded image. This function cuts out and enlarges a certain portion of the image, so the image quality deteriorates. For close-ups of subjects like flowers or insects, shoot using the macro feature.
You can shoot subjects approaching up to 10 cm 4 inches when the zoom is set to its W- end. However, the available focus distance depends on the zoom position. We recommend that you set the zoom to its W- end during shooting. DSC-P Approx. The macro indicator appears on the LCD screen. Press and hold the shutter button halfway down to focus on, then press the shutter button fully down.
Press B on the control button again. The indicator disappears from the LCD screen. If you use the finder, the limits of what you see and what you actually shoot may be different.
This is due to the parallax effect. The self-timer indicator appears on the LCD screen. The self-timer lamp page 8 will flash, and you will hear a beeping sound. The image will be shot after approximately 10 seconds.
Press V on the control button again. No indicator Auto : The camera decides to use the flash based on lighting conditions. The flash will be used when there is not enough light or when shooting a subject against a light source.
Forced flash : The flash will be used regardless of the amount of ambient light. Slow synchro : The flash will be used regardless of the amount of ambient light. In this mode, the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, so you can. No flash : The flash will not be used. P Approx. First pre-emission is to adjust the amount of flash light, and second emission is to shoot the image. When the mode dial is set to , you cannot change the brightness of the flash.
After charging is. In Auto mode, shooting against a light source automatically flashes even when there is enough light around the subject. Daylight synchro. The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. In addition, the distance to the subject, and whether or not the subject has seen pre-strobe light begin to strobe may also reduce the effectiveness of the red-eye reduction process.
The AF illuminator is fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. The ON appears on the LCD screen and the AF illuminator emits red light when the shutter button is pressed halfway until the focus is locked. The or indicator flashes, and AF operates with priority on subjects located near.
Although there are no problems with safety, directly looking into the AF illuminator emitter at close range is not recommended. The finder is convenient when you want to save battery power, or when it is difficult to confirm the image using the LCD screen.

After the setting has been completed, set the mode dial to to shoot your image. Select one of the following modes, then shoot by pressing the shutter button and this will have a positive effect on your photo. Under dark lighting conditions, you can shoot a distant night view.
Because the shutter speed is slow, it is recommended that you use a tripod. Twilight portrait mode. Use this mode when shooting people in the foreground at night. This mode allows you to shoot images of people in the foreground with distinct outlines without losing the feeling that you are shooting at night. Landscape mode. Focuses on images far away, so is convenient for shooting landscapes at a distance. When shooting seaside or lakeside scenes, the blue of the water is clearly recorded.
Candle mode. At a party, a candlelight service, and so on, you can shoot without spoiling the atmosphere effected by the candlelight. When shooting with the mode dial set to , , , , or , the combination of some functions, such as the flash mode, are fixed to suit shooting conditions. See the following table. The NR slow shutter function reduces noise from recorded images, providing clear images. You can view images shot with the camera almost immediately on the LCD screen.
